What to consider when installing an in-ground basketball system

If you’re thinking about putting an in-ground hoop in your yard, here are some questions you should ask yourself:

1. What size backboard do I need?

Regulation backboards are typically 42 inches tall by 72 inches wide, according to NBA rules The type of backboards sold for use at home are sometimes smaller, 36 inches tall by 54 inches wide.

We're not saying you need to recreate Madison Square Garden in your driveway, but we will say that the bigger the backboard, the better. When you have a larger backboard, it's easier for your younger players to make bank shots.

2. What backboard material should I pick?

Backboards are most often made from four materials: plastic, acrylic, polycarbonate or glass. Of these four, your safest bets are polycarbonate and glass. Polycarbonate tends to be sturdier than plastic and acrylic. While glass costs more, it is the longest lasting type of backboard material and a great rebound provider.

3. How can I tell the quality of the pole?

Look for the lower numbers. An in-ground basketball hoop made from 7-gauge steel is made with a thicker metal and will last longer than one made from 16-gauge steel.

4. Is it adjustable?

This might be the most crucial question. Just as you want a swing set that can grow and change with your kids, you want a basketball system that can appeal to children of different ages and skill levels.

That's where an adjustable hoop comes in. These are popular with parents because they give you more flexibility than other hoop varieties.

You might have more than one child, all growing at different rates, some better at basketball than others. An adjustable-height hoop allows you to lower or raise the rim so kids of all ages and heights can play.
