Like a lot of big purchases, your wooden swing set is an investment. And like any investment, you want to make sure it’s protected.
A good swing set will provide years of fun, as long as you provide the proper maintenance. Let’s look at some of the swing set care steps you can take to make sure your kids and their friends are safe at play.
-
Use caution during cold weather. Plastic components on your swing set may not be intended to stay outside through frigid temperatures. If you can, detach plastic pieces and bring them indoors when the temperature goes below freezing.
-
Another part of swing set maintenance is caring for the set’s metal components. You need to oil them on a regular basis, but be sure to consult with the manufacturer to find the right type of oil/grease for your set.
-
Wooden swing sets need protection from the elements. Protect your set against the weather with paint and water sealer, and consider covering it with a tarp when it’s not in use, especially during cold/rainy seasons. Swingset & Toy Warehouse carries the LevelDry system, which helps protect wooden swing sets against ground moisture.
-
You might find splinters forming on a wooden set after a long period of dry weather. Sand down any splinters you find, and consider treating the wood to reduce splintering.
-
Make sure the base around your swing set is properly maintained. If your base is made of mulch, replace it every year. Sand bases last longer, but should still be replaced every few years. Rake the base throughout the season to maintain its depth, and look for hidden debris.
-
Inspect the swing set each month for sharp edges that could catch on a child’s clothing or cause a cut or other injuries.
-
Check all the set’s nuts and bolts at the start of each season to make sure they are tight. Replace any nuts and bolts that are rusted or otherwise damaged.
-
Look for excessive wear on the swing set’s chains, as well as cracks in the plastic seat covering or the seat itself. Any of these issues mean it’s time to replace the chair or the chains.
-
Your swing set’s manufacturer designed the set the way they did for a reason. If you see any modifications – for example, someone has wrapped the chains around the top rail in order to raise the swing – restore them to their original place. Altering your swing set can increase the risk of an accident.
-
Check the area around the swing set for trip hazards and get rid of any objects that may be hidden in the sand or mulch. Be sure the swing set is level and properly anchored to the ground.
