If you’re reading this, chances are it’s because you’re interested in purchasing a shed.

And as we’ve written before, putting a shed on your property is something that comes with a number of advantages.

But you might be wondering what type of shed to get. Wood sheds vs. vinyl sheds, both have their selling points. Let’s find out which one is right for you.

Hand painting a shed.Which one will last longer?

Vinyl sheds will last for decades without needing any paint, although you should try to keep them washed. Your washing schedule will depend on the climate.

If you live somewhere with a lot of blowing dust, or a wetter climate where mold is likely, you’ll need to wash it more often. Otherwise, make sure to wash your shed every year or so.

Fight the elements

With vinyl sheds, natural threats such as rot, insects and rust will never be a concern. Wood decays and metal corrodes, while vinyl lasts for generations.

Easier to move

A vinyl shed will be much lighter than its wooden counterparts, making it easy to move.

Picking colors

Wooden siding will need a fresh coat of paint every seven years. On the plus side, if you get sick of the color of your wooden shed, you can always repaint it, something that can’t be said for vinyl sheds.

While wooden sheds are typically less expensive to buy, vinyl sheds cost less to maintain.

So, in short, vinyl sheds tend to be sturdier and more weather resistant, and easier and cheaper to maintain. But what are the advantages to installing a shed in the first place?

They include:

  • Safety – A shed lets you keep the hazardous – albeit useful – things you have around the house away from your kids. You won’t need to worry about them getting into the lawn chemicals, or trying to play with power tools.
  • Protect your valuables – Vinyl sheds provide you with a perfect vessel for keeping valuable equipment safe from the elements and from theft.
  • Add value to your home – If you find yourself selling your home, you’ll be able to give potential buyers an extra asset.
  • Not just for storage – While a vinyl shed gives you plenty of storage options, don’t think of it as just a place to keep things. You can use it to entertain during cookouts, turn it into a clubhouse for your kids, or as a space where you practice your hobbies and crafts.
