Spring, summer, and winter all have their fans, but as seasons go, fall is the real crowd-pleaser. The leaves are changing, football season is underway, and Halloween is waiting for its big moment.
It’s a great time to be outside, as well: not too hot, and (usually) not too cold. Whether you’re out exploring your community or enjoying your backyard playsets with your family, there are plenty of ways for you to enjoy the season:
1. Go Apple Picking
Anyone with a garden can tell you how good homegrown fruits and vegetables taste. The same is true for apples fresh from the tree. Take your family to a local orchard to pick apples. You’ll come away with a basket of delicious fall snacks, or perhaps the makings of a refreshing cider or an amazing dessert.
2. Jump In A Pile Of Leaves
Leaf raking can be a chore, so give your kids a reward at the end by letting them leap into the pile.
3. Take A Drive
By mid-October, trees will have swapped their summer greens for lovely shades of gold and orange and crimson. There’s no better place to enjoy this change than by taking a drive out into the country and taking in the scenery.
4. Get Started On Halloween
We’re not saying you should put fake cobwebs on your porch in early September. But maybe you and your kids can start planning their Halloween costumes, and work on creating something memorable and homemade they can wear while trick-or-treating.
5. Festival Season
Plenty of communities have fall festivals, often based around a seasonal crop (apples, pumpkins, etc.) Get out and enjoy the one in your town.
6. Learn To Knit
And if you already know, pass this skill onto your kids. True, this is an indoor activity, but you can make scarves, sweaters, and other cozy items to stay warm in the autumn chill.
7. Go On A Haunted Walking Tour
Get into the Halloween spirit by taking a tour of your communities haunted spots. Failing that, you can always find various haunted attractions around town. Just be sure the one you’ve chosen isn’t too scary for small children.
8. Escape The Corn Maze
Just like haunted houses, corn mazes are a popular fall attraction in any community. Challenge your family’s senses of direction and teamwork as you try to make your way through.
9. Carve A Pumpkin
This one will probably need to wait until late October, or you’ll risk attracting more fruit flies than trick-or-treaters.
10. Have A Fall Picnic
Picnics aren’t just for spring and summer. Bundle up, pour some hot chocolate or cider into a thermos and bring a football to toss around. A little exercise will help you keep warm.
11. Have A Movie Night
Bundle up under a blanket and have a horror movie marathon. Start with some kid-friendly picks (and maybe something Halloweenish, but not scary, like The Great Pumpkin). You can watch the really scary stuff after they go to bed. If the night is warm enough, you can do this in your backyard. (You may still need blankets.)
12. Go On A Scavenger Hunt
Scavenger hunts in the heat of summer can be uncomfortable. Try one this fall when the temperatures drop. Give your kids a camera and a list of fall-related things to hunt for: red leaves, apples, scarecrows, pumpkins, etc.
13. Make A Scarecrow
It’s a classic fall decoration, and all you’ll need is some old clothing and some straw. If you don’t have straw, you can always use leaves or old newspapers.
14. Play In The Backyard
You don’t need to go far from home to have fun during the fall. There’s still plenty of time to take advantage of your swing sets, trampolines or basketball hoops.
And you can find all of those things at Swingset & Toy Warehouse, whether you shop online or come see us at one of our New Jersey locations.
