One of the scariest scenes in the movie Jaws has nothing to do with the shark.
It’s in the first 10 minutes of the movie, where we meet Chief Brody, his family, and their dangerous – it cuts the older son’s hand – creaky, 1970s metal swing-set.
OK, so we may be biased, given our line of work. But there’s something about seeing a low-quality backyard swing set that makes us cringe.
It’s the cornerstone of every public service ad aimed at parents:
“Talk to your kids about…”
That’s easier said than done. Most parents can tell you that talking with your kids isn’t always easy, especially as they get older.
Still, it’s important to know what’s going on in their lives, and in their heads. Parenting magazine offers these strategies for mixing kids and conversation. Try them out the next time you and your child are playing a game together.
Winter is almost upon us. Days are getting shorter and shorter, temperatures are falling and the wooden swing set in your backyard isn’t getting much use.
But while it may be too cold for your kids to spend much time outdoors, that doesn’t mean you can’t get some use out of your backyard playset for at least part of this winter.

It’s easy to string lights along a swing set, whether you’re hanging icicle lights from the horizontal beams and wrapping lights around the legs. You could also decorate the space around the swing set by putting up plastic or inflatable decorations: Candy canes, reindeer or a Nativity scene.
